Lady Mustangs win CAA Division 2 State Championship

The buzzer sounded and jubilation from the Mustang bench spilt unto the Talking Stick Resort Arena floor. Final score read 63-40 as our Lady Mustangs defeated arch rival Salt River High School to claim it’s first State Championship.

“It’s a great way to close out as a senior!” Sequioa Lucero who was also named the games Most Valuable Player finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 blocks. “We really appreciated all the fans who came out to support us tonight.” Lucero added.

“The girls really put together a great year, we had many goals this season and we accomplished all of them…I couldn’t be more proud!” Head Coach Daveda Taylor stated. “It’s great for the girls to get this feeling and we are very excited for the community as well.” Taylor added.

Senior Angelica Ulate echoed Coach Taylor’s sentiments. “As a team we wanted to have the best season in the history of Lady Mustangs Basketball.” “We are close like a family on this team and we now have this great accomplishment together!” Ulate quipped.

Principal Vaughn Flannigan was very elated on this great night. “It’s great to see all that hard work pay off for these wonderful student-athletes.” “They are not only champions on the court but in the classroom as they hold an overall GPA of a 3.6” Flannigan stated. “They set a high standard for all our future student-athletes to follow.” Flannigan ended with.
